• ‘Losing points seems strange’

Hashim Amla has questioned the ICC’s ranking system after South Africa lost Test points following their 0-0 series draw against Bangladesh.

In the two Tests that were scheduled, the teams were only able to play four days of cricket as heavy rain in the monsoon season, as well as cyclone Komen, caused the last four days of the second Test to be washed out.

Amla labelled the series ‘bizarre’ and questioned why the No 1-ranked Test team in the world lost five points with so little cricket played.

‘It’s a difficult one to understand why we have lost points,’ Amla said. ‘You could understand it if it was a 1-1 draw where you have played enough cricket to have a true reflection, so perhaps this is something that can be re-looked at by the ICC. All you want is something that is fair and applies to all teams.

‘Us losing points seems a little strange considering we haven’t played a lot of cricket, but I’m sure that it’s something the ICC will probably have a look at.’

Amla said they were still able to take some positives from the series even though there was so little cricket played.

‘We saw glimpses of Temba’s [Bavuma] talent in the first Test and Dane Vilas kept wicket extremely well in the second Test. He is a very good batsman but he hasn’t got a chance to show that.

‘The youngsters in the squad would have taken a lot out of this tour in terms of seeing what is needed to play at international level. Not everyone got the opportunities we would have wanted but certainly their opportunities will come at some other time. When it rains there isn’t much you can do.’

The Proteas fly back to South Africa on Tuesday and will probably have a quick break before they start preparing for the incoming tour of New Zealand.

According to Amla the frustrations with the Test series won’t have any affect on the team going forward because they will only be playing T20 and ODI cricket against the Black Caps.
