AB de Villiers has admitted he will be speaking to head coach Mark Boucher at the end of the IPL campaign about a possible return to international cricket, saying it would be ‘fantastic’ to play for the Proteas again.

De Villiers announced his international retirement in 2018 but has been in talks with Boucher since last year about returning ahead of the T20 World Cup in India.

Speaking after his incredible knock for the Royal Challengers Bangalore this past Sunday, De Villiers acknowledged that there has been talks between himself and Boucher with the focus on him finding form in the IPL first.

‘We’ve been talking about it. Already last year he asked me if I would be interested and I said, “Absolutely”. Coming into the IPL we will look at where we are with regard to my form, my fitness. If I can slot in there, it would be fantastic for all these things to fall into place,’ De Villiers explained.

‘I am waiting for Boucher towards the end of the IPL and then we will plan accordingly.’

The former Proteas captain will provide a massive boost to a struggling Proteas T20I outfit and his continued success in the shorter format should provide a lot of confidence to South Africa heading into a World Cup.

De Villiers was at his innovative best again on Sunday, striking an unbeaten 76 of 34 deliveries to help RCB to a 38-run win over the Kolkata Knight Riders.
