Richard Levi expanded his repertoire to hammer 67 off 28 balls and help Northamptonshire to a nine-wicket win in a rain-hit T20 Blast match.

Levi has been on a roll in the County Championship, hammering four fifties and a career best 168 in four matches batting at No 5, while his T20 efforts have been less spectacular than he would have wanted, running up 270 runs in 10 innings before this boosted his averages.

But this time he opened the innings and stepped up in this match, smashing nine fours and two sixes for a strike rate of 239.

Leicestershire owe their total in the 11 overs allocated to a 56 from the Jo’burg-born New Zealand World Cup hero Grant Elliott, while Rory Kleinveldt was the best bowler in taking 1-15 off his two overs.

In the County Championship, Dawid Malan continued his good form by scoring 69 in Middlesex’s first-innings of 283 against Somerset.

It was heavy going, taking 183 balls,with nine fours, while Tim Groenewald took 4-55 off 23 overs.

Somerset’s reply was muted, ending the day on 185-8, with Johann Myburgh offering just one.

Across the ocean, Robbie Peterson’s 3-13 set up a 17-run win for defending champions Barbados Tridents over Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean T20 league at Sabina Park. More importantly, the victory – Tridents’ fifth of the season – helped them pull clear of Tallawahs by two points at the top of the table.

Keiron Pollard’s unbeaten 59 rescued the Tridents from a difficult situation and took the score to 146, with Rusty Theron taking 2-39. But it still needed something special from the bowlers, and Peterson’s left-arm spin provided it, reducing the Tallawahs from 34-1 to 36-4 in the fifth over alone.

The following day, Marchant de Lange took 2-17 and David Wiese 1-30 as the Guyana Amazon Warriors beat the Tallawahs by 84 runs. The Warriors chalked up 179 after being sent in to bat, but the Tallawahs collapsed spectacularly to their fourth defeat.
