• On This Day: Netherlands stun England

    Relive the historic scenes from Lord’s back in 2009 when the Netherlands beat hosts England in the opening match of the ICC World T20.

    In what was only the second edition of a T20 World Cup, minnows the Netherlands caused one of the greatest upsets in the modern game to account for probably the biggest victory in their country’s cricket history.

    Paul Collingwood’s men were made to bat first and managed to post a very respectable 162-5 in their 20 overs thanks mainly to a half-century by opener Luke Wright.

    In response the feeling was persistent that the Dutch batting lineup would start to collapse at some stage in the innings.

    But, instead their middle order combined brilliantly to edge closer to the total set by the English.

    It resulted in quite a nerve-wrecking final over, which was bowled by Stuart Broad and led to the Netherlands requiring 2 runs off the final delivery for a victory.

    A single would’ve meant a super over, while a dot ball by Broad would’ve given the home team an escape victory.

    With the whole of Lord’s on its feet due to the suspense, Broad steamed in around the wicket for the final ball with Netherlands’ bowler Edgar Schiferli on strike.

    Schiferli just about got bat on ball as Broad went for the yorker, the ball struck straight back to the bowler with the Netherlands’ batsmen setting off between the wickets.

    Broad, diving to the ground, had a clear shy at the stumps at the bowler’s end with Schiferli well out of the frame and short of his ground.

    But, the English bowler missed the opportunity as the ball travelled into enough space as a result that gave Schiferli and his partner Ryan ten Doeschate the chance to turn for a second run, handing the Netherlands a remarkable four-wicket victory.
