During his first-ever tour of England in 2003, Graeme Smith became one of only four batsmen to ever hit double centuries in consecutive Test matches.

Leading up to the five-match Test series and at the age of 22, Smith became South Africa’s youngest-ever captain as he replaced Shaun Pollock.

A new star in South African cricket firmament emerged and paved the way for a stellar Test career, often described as one of the best ever in this format.

The series finished as a 2-2 draw but Smith made all the headlines with a shared Man of the Series performance where he struck 277 in the first Test at Edgbaston – a South African record at the time – before following it up in the second encounter at Lord’s with 259, which until this day is still the highest Test score by an opposition player at the famous ground.

Smith finished the series with the most runs, accounting for a total of 714, while fast bowler Makhaya Ntini took the most wickets over the five matches with 23.
