Dale Steyn’s famous 10-wicket haul at the MCG at the end of 2008 eventually helped the Proteas to claim their first-ever Test series win in Australia after cruising to victory in the second Test by nine wickets.
Five wickets in each innings (5-87, 5-67) by Steyn helped set the Proteas a target of 182 to win, while JP Duminy’s incredible 166 in the first innings gave the visitors a lifeline after a rather poor start with the bat.
At the time, though, Steyn was starting to break on to the scene as one of the leading bowlers in the world and that performance set the tone for a dominant period of South African cricket in the Test format.
The Proteas would win the three-match series 2-1 by claiming victories in Perth and Melbourne before Australia won the final encounter in Sydney.
