Cricket South Africa chief executive officer Thabang Moroe has confirmed the second edition of the Mzansi Super League will be televised by the South African Broadcasting Corporation.
The free-to-air SABC, rather than paid-service SuperSport, broadcast last year’s inaugural edition.
‘For this year the league will continue being on SABC. In the next week or two we will communicate such plans in terms of how we intend to roll out the league,’ said Moroe.
The six MSL franchises, meanwhile, announced their retained players this week.
CSA’s current broadcast deal with paid-channel SuperSport for all international cricket – including the Proteas’ upcoming tour of India – will continue until May 2021.
‘As far as the restructuring of broadcast deals is concerned, it’s pretty difficult to say now. We tend to sometimes forget that we are not in the same situation as Australia, for example, in that the amount of money the public broadcaster pumps into sport with the help of the government,’ added Moroe.
‘We’re not in a similar landscape to England in terms of the number of broadcasters they have in their country who want to have sport on their respective channels.
‘We’re not in a similar space to India, either, where on average pay TV costs $2 per month and there are numerous broadcasters there as well who are all interested in their key content being cricket.
‘CSA doesn’t have much room to move in terms of making decisions. I think as things stand we are lucky to be where we are in that we can broadcast international cricket on both free to air and pay TV.’
