David Warner’s ton helped Australia jump to second on the World Cup standings with a 41-run win over Pakistan in Taunton.

Australia were put into bat first against unpredictable Pakistan.

The way the Aussies got their innings going, it seemed the incorrect decision by Pakistan as Warner and Aaron Finch punished them in the opening 22 overs.

Finch managed 82 before the pair’s 146-run partnership was broken by Pakistan’s best bowler on the day, Mohammad Amir.

Warner (107) managed to reach a century, but lost two partners at the crease before he lost his own wicket at the end of the 38th over with 242 on the board. This was Warner’s first century of the tournament, and his 15th in his ODI career.

After Pakistan’s poor start with the ball, Australia started to fade away, but did, however, pass the 300-run mark before being bowled out on the stroke of the 49th over for 307.

Amir was fantastic for Pakistan, picking up 5-30 in his 10 overs.

Pakistan’s batting started off timidly. They lost Fakhar Zaman for a duck and Babar Azam for 30 in 10.5 overs.

There was a positive recovery from Pakistan through Imam-ul-Haq (53), Mohammad Hafeez (40), Sarfaraz Ahmed (40), Wahab Riaz (45), and a cameo quick-fire 15-ball 32 from Hasan Ali, but this wasn’t enough to take their side over the line.

Ultimately it was Australia’s pace attack that did the business. Pat Cummins (3-33), Mitchell Starc (2-43) and Kane Richardson (2-62) took the majority of the wickets as Australia cleaned up Pakistan for 266 in just under 46 overs.

The win took Australia to second on the standings after four games, behind unbeaten New Zealand.
