West Indies tailender Miguel Cummins collected a 45-ball duck on day three of the first Test against India in North Sound, Antigua, on Saturday.
Only New Zealand’s Geoff Allott and England trio James Anderson, Richard Ellison and Peter Such have faced more deliveries for a duck in Test cricket.
Allott’s runless stay spanned 77 deliveries against South Africa in Auckland in 1999.
‘It was probably the best duck I’ll ever score. I had no idea of the record until the public address announcer said that I’d broken the New Zealand record. Even the South Africans were smiling. You’ve got to see the funny side,’ said Allott at the time.
South African AB de Villiers holds the record for the most Test innings before a first duck. De Villiers went 78 innings before falling for zero against Bangladesh in Centurion in 2008.
Tailender Andre Nel has the most consecutive ducks in Test cricket by a South African. He fell for four consecutive zeroes against Australia, Pakistan and the West Indies between 2002 and 2003.
South Africa have 10 cricketers who collected a pair of ducks on Test debut, including tailender Allan Donald against the West Indies in Bridgetown in 1992 and batsman Dean Elgar versus Australia in Perth in 2012.
