The Central Gauteng Lions were 315-5 at stumps on day two of their match against the Boland Rocks in Paarl.
After the first day had been rained out, the Lions won the toss on Monday and opted to bat first.
Joshua Richards (84) and Reeza Hendricks (67) took the visitors to 173-1 before the former was dismissed by Rocks spinner Shaun von Berg, who had earlier picked up the wicket of Lions captain Dominic Hendricks (34).
Von Berg (3-81) then caught and bowled Kagiso Rapulana for a duck, but Mitchell van Buuren’s unbeaten 73 and a useful 37 from Connor Esterhuizen kept the Lions on top.
In Durban, the KZN Dolphins took their overnight score of 322-7 to 348 all out, with Jason Smith scoring 136 before being trapped lbw by North West Dragons’ debutant spinner JP King (3-10).
Fast bowler Eldred Hawken finished with impressive figures of 4-34 from 22 overs.
Dolphins spinners JJ Smuts (4-50) and Prenelan Subrayen (4-63) then starred with the ball as the Dragons ended the day on 166-9, still trailing by 182 runs.
Rain again limited play in the match between the EP Warriors and Northerns Titans at St George’s Park.
The hosts were 150-3 at stumps, with Matthew Breetzke (67*) and Sinethemba Qeshile (25*) at the crease.
