A 22-year-old Indian cricketer, Abdul Wajid, has died in hospital after sustaining severe head injuries during a casual weekend match in Bahadurpura.
The youngster was playing a casual game of cricket at the Idgah ground, which often plays host to many informal weekend matches among the locals.
The tragedy struck when Wajid attempted to field a ball that had landed on an adjacent pitch being used for another match. As he went to retrieve the ball, he came too close to the stumps being used for the match.
‘At the same time, the batsman of that team tried to hit a ball, but the bat hit Wajid as he came within its reach,’ Ashok Chakravarthy, Charminar ACP, has been reported as saying in The Hindu.
As the bat struck Wajid, he fell to the ground and landed on a pile of stones being used as stumps. He sustained severe head injuries and was immediately rushed to hospital, though he failed to respond to treatment.
A case of ‘culpable homicide not amounting to murder’ has been brought against Irfan, the batsman who allegedly struck Wajid with the bat.
