Dane van Niekerk picked up remarkable figures of 4-0 as her Proteas Women blew West Indies away for just 48 in their World Cup clash on Sunday.
West Indies’ rot had already begun before Van Niekerk’s spell, with the islanders reeling at 16-5. A brief period of resistance followed, which saw the addition of 22 runs before Van Niekerk brought herself on to bowl in order to drive home the Proteas advantage.
She did exactly that when she took the wicket of Merissa Aguilleira. She produced another wicket-maiden in her very next over by dismissing Shanel Daley to leave West Indies’ innings in tatters at 42-7.
Van Niekerk made it three wicket-maidens in as many overs when she had Chedean Nation caught by Marizanne Kapp (4-9) for a resilient 26. The captain then put the finishing touches to what had been a mesmerising spell of leg-spin bowling when she had No 11 Qiana Joseph trapped LBW to complete the demolition of West Indies, who crumbled to 48 all out.
