The Proteas Women and New Zealand have shared the spoils in Derby after their World Cup clash was washed out on Wednesday.
After the Proteas Women’s nerve-wracking three-wicket victory against Pakistan Women on Sunday, Dane van Niekerk’s side were looking for better success against one of the best sides in the tournament, the White Ferns.
New Zealand, who smashed Sri Lanka Women by nine wickets in their opener in Bristol on Saturday, beat the Proteas 5-2 late-last year, so the No 3-ranked ODI side will probably be the more unhappier of the two sides to have only picked up a point.
Heavy rain was forecast leading up to the clash, and sure enough, the players were welcomed to huge puddles on the outfield. While the rain was stop-start, drainage became the biggest issue, and eventually it was too late for even a 20-20 game to get under way.
Both sides have three points from their opening two matches. The Proteas will now turn their attention to Leicester on Sunday, when they do battle with West Indies Women.
